Not So Traditional

My entertainment during lunch today was a paperback of wedding checklists that I picked up at the local library for a dime. Being a list-making person already, I thought I'd do well with this book. After reading through the first few sections, I've come to realize that I'm not nearly as traditional as I thought I was!

"While you are at the stationery store, order the bride's stationery trousseau: calling cards, informals, formal notes, everyday paper..." I've heard of these things in Jane Austen novels, but for every day use... really?

"Select bridesmaids' dresses and headpieces." They are supposed to wear headpieces? Maybe my sisters were on the right track with the flower girl headband they tried on...

"Select the proper shade of pantyhose for bridesmaids, and have each girl buy a pair." Next you're going to insist that it is control top pantyhose! I am not that cruel to my friends.

"Take a [bridesmaid] dress sample when you purchase lipsticks and nail polish" and "Give your maid of honor the lipstick and nail polish for all the attendants to use." I know I can be a bit detail-oriented, but this is taking things a little too far! And I'm not going to make my girls share a tube of lipstick, though the nail polish idea has merit (I'm thinking of you and your bright orange toes, Mary!)

"It is customary for the bride or her mother to suggest a selection of colors from which the groom's mother may choose. Black dresses are not suitable for this happy occasion." Mom's dress is black. So are all of my bridesmaids' dresses. Dave's mom is more than welcome to wear black as well.

What on earth is an "Engagement Tea"? And I can't even remember the last time I went to a wedding where they actually had a receiving line...

Needless to say, the book has been posted to PaperBackSwap.com, and I have plenty more wedding books and magazines at home to grab next time.

  1. Hahahahaha!!! Did you check the publication date on it? Are you sure it WASN'T published in the 1800s???

I considered my wedding (and myself) fairly traditional but wow!

I had the Bridal Luncheon but don't get me started. Lol!

  2. That is too funny! I don't think I'd want to be incharge of passing out the lipstick and nail polish...but I do remember a particular bride and her bridesmaids getting a pedicure before the rehersal dinner..complete with matching toenail polish!

A bridal luncheon would be nice, but you are having your ceremony a little early. If you do the luncheon, it would have to be a breakfast.

  3. Robin, it was originally published in 1961, but had been last updated in the early 90's--that was the first thing I checked before I even started reading!
